Choosing Bed Sheet Fabric: Fiber, Weave and Care

Choose sheets by fiber and construction

A good sheet fabric suits your comfort preferences, mattress and laundry routine. Fiber names and construction names describe different things: cotton and linen are fibers; percale, sateen, flannel and jersey describe types of fabric construction or finishing.

Compare common options

Cotton sheets come in many weights and weaves, so compare the actual product.

Linen sheets use flax fiber and often have a textured hand.

Percale and sateen offer different woven structures and feel.

Flannel has a brushed surface that may suit a preference for warmth.

Jersey sheets are knitted and can feel stretchy.

Lyocell and blends vary by composition and finishing; read the label.

Look beyond thread count

Yarn, weave, weight, finishing and workmanship affect performance. A high thread-count number alone does not guarantee a better sheet. Touch a sample, check fit and review the care instructions before buying.

Care and product claims

Use the product’s care label. Claims about cooling, skin comfort or environmental impact need product-specific evidence. A fiber name alone cannot substantiate every claim.

Changing the color

Dyeing suitability depends on the fiber percentages, finish and available process. A sheet set may include thread, elastic and trims that respond differently. Test a sample before treating the whole set.For additional buying context, see CottonWorks’ home textiles guide.
