What thread count measures
Thread count describes the number of warp and weft threads in a square inch of woven fabric. It is one construction measure, not a complete score for softness, durability or sheet quality.
Why a larger number is not automatically better
The fiber, yarn quality, weave, finishing and fabric weight all influence how sheets feel and wear. Comparing two thread-count numbers without those details can hide more than it reveals. Knit sheets also should not be assessed as though they were the same woven construction.

Choose for the way you sleep
Handle a sample if possible. A crisp fabric and a smooth, drapey fabric can both be good choices, but serve different preferences. Consider room temperature and how easily you can follow the care label.
If you plan to dye sheets
Identify the actual fiber first. Finishes, blends and polyester sewing thread may affect a color change. Test representative material and confirm that the whole sheet can move freely in the selected process. The CottonWorks home buyer’s guide provides additional context on cotton home textiles.
