Inspect the area around the hole
A repair needs sound material to anchor it. If the surrounding sock is badly worn, a tiny patch over the opening may not last. Assess the size and position before choosing a darning method.
Choose suitable materials
- A needle appropriate for the yarn and knit.
- Repair yarn with compatible weight and care requirements.
- A darning support that holds the sock without overstretching it.
- Good light and a way to inspect both sides.
Make a supported repair
For a woven darn, anchor yarn in sound fabric around the opening, span the area with parallel strands and weave across them. Keep tension even and allow the repair to remain flexible. Practice on an expendable sample first.
Secure and inspect
Work ends into suitable surrounding material rather than leaving a hard knot against the foot. Check for roughness, puckering and pressure points. The repair may remain visible, particularly with a contrasting yarn.
Match the method to the knit
Reknitting or other methods may be better for some structures. A darning mushroom can support the work, but does not replace understanding how the stitches are secured.
Care and color
Wash according to the sock and repair yarn’s compatible instructions. If dyeing is planned, different repair fibers can retain a different color.Explore our sewing and textile-care guides for related repair planning.
