Makeup Stains on Fabric: Product-Specific Treatment

Identify the makeup and textile

Foundation, lipstick, mascara and powder can contain different oils, waxes and pigments. The garment’s fiber, color, finish and care instructions determine what treatment it can tolerate.

Remove loose material gently

Where the textile permits, lift loose excess without rubbing it deeper into the surface. Do not smear powder or drag a hard tool across delicate yarns.

Select a compatible stain product

Read its fabric exclusions.

Test in a concealed area as directed.

Use the specified application and contact time.

Follow the required wash and rinse.

Inspect before further treatment or heat drying.

Avoid universal household remedies

Hairspray, rubbing alcohol and dish soap are not interchangeable fabric stain treatments. They can leave residue or affect dyes and finishes. Hot water should not be prescribed for every lipstick stain regardless of the garment label.

Professional-clean-only pieces

Consult a suitable cleaner, particularly for valuable, structured or embellished garments. Tell them the makeup type and any previous products applied.
