Use the manual for your machine
Thread paths, bobbins, controls and safety instructions vary by model. Find the correct manual before setup. Singer provides a model-based manual library; use the corresponding source for another brand.
Prepare a practice sample
- Use a compatible needle system, type and size.
- Select suitable thread and a bobbin specified for the machine.
- Prepare scraps with the same layers as your project.
- Follow the manual for threading and bobbin insertion.
- Set the stitch and presser foot required for the task.
Sew slowly and inspect
Position the sample, lower the presser foot and begin at a controlled speed. Guide the cloth without pulling it through the machine. Remove pins before they reach the needle. Keep hands clear of moving parts and follow the manual when changing needles or servicing the machine.
Check both sides of the seam
Look for loops, skipped stitches, puckering and the intended seam allowance. Rethread according to the manual before making large tension changes. Test adjustments on scraps rather than the finished garment.
Finish for the project
Secure the seam using the method appropriate to the stitch and material. A stretch fabric may need a different stitch from a simple woven sample. Press and finish seam allowances as instructed by the pattern and care label.Continue with our straight-seam guide for hand and machine basics.
