Identify the upholstery before treating a stain
The furniture maker’s instructions govern cleaning. The face fabric, backing, filling, adhesives and finish can all react to treatment. A recipe suitable for one upholstery product may damage another.
Start with the label and manufacturer
Check the care tag and the instructions for the exact fabric or furniture. Where cleaning codes are provided, follow their meaning and the maker’s detailed directions. If the material is unknown, get advice before applying water or solvent.
For a fresh spill
Where the instructions allow, lift loose material and blot with a clean absorbent cloth without rubbing the spill further in. Avoid saturating the cushion or mixing cleaners. Use a tested treatment appropriate to both the stain and the material.
Test and reassess
Check compatibility in a concealed area.
Watch for color transfer or surface changes.
Follow the specified application and rinse method.
Allow the item to dry as directed.
Stop if the treatment worsens the appearance.
Manufacturer-specific methods stay specific
Sunbrella’s upholstery cleaning instructions apply to its specified fabrics. They should not be copied onto an unrelated sofa by assumption.
Dye is not a guaranteed stain cover
Stains, residues and fiber damage can affect dye uptake. A color change may leave the original mark visible. Ask an upholstery dyeing specialist to assess the whole construction.
