Find clothing colors you enjoy wearing
Personal color choices are subjective. Warm, cool and neutral palettes can help organize experiments, but vein color or jewelry preference is not a definitive test that tells you which shades you must wear.
Compare real fabric in consistent light
Hold several swatches near your face in daylight or the lighting where you will wear the garment. Keep the surroundings and makeup consistent when comparing. Notice whether you prefer softer or stronger contrast, muted or vivid color, and lighter or darker shades.
Try a small set rather than a rule
Compare two shades of the same color, such as a warm red and a cooler red.
Try different depths, such as pale blue, medium blue and navy.
Compare a soft shade with a saturated one.
Consider the clothes and accessories you already use.
Take the whole outfit into account
Texture, sheen and neighboring colors change the impression. An accessory can introduce a favorite color without replacing the whole wardrobe. Your comfort and intended look matter more than fitting a fixed category.
Choose a realistic dyeing target
A swatch gives a dyer a better reference than a screen image. The original color, fiber blend and trims limit the result; dye cannot simply make a dark item pale. Ask about a sample and expected variation before recoloring a favorite garment.
