Washing Wool Sweaters: Label-Led Washing and Drying

Check the sweater’s care claim

Some wool garments permit machine washing, some require hand washing and some specify professional cleaning. Use the label for the finished item; fiber content alone is not a complete washing instruction.

If hand washing is permitted

Use the water conditions and detergent specified by the label and detergent instructions. Handle the garment gently and avoid vigorous rubbing, twisting or wringing. Follow the required rinse procedure rather than borrowing a soak time from another product.

If machine washing is permitted

Use a suitable wool program and compatible detergent according to the garment and machine instructions. A generic delicate cycle is not automatically equivalent to a wool cycle. Check load size and other program requirements.

Dry without losing shape

Follow the drying label. For a sweater requiring flat drying, remove excess water gently, reshape and support it on an appropriate flat surface. Avoid hanging a wet sweater by its shoulders, which can distort its shape.

Stains and storage

Check a treatment’s suitability for wool before spot cleaning.

Test a concealed area where appropriate.

Store the item clean and fully dry.

Inspect stored garments and use appropriate moth prevention.

Seek professional advice for valuable, structured or damaged pieces.
