Prepare garments before storage
Follow the care label to clean an item where needed and allow it to dry fully. Inspect for stains, damage and loose closures. Storing damp or soiled clothing can create avoidable problems.
Choose folding or hanging
Support structured pieces with suitable hangers and protect decorations from snagging. Fold heavy knitwear where hanging could distort it. Leave room so clothing is not crushed into tight stacks.
Match containers to the item
- Use clean storage that protects from dust.
- Keep the environment dry and reasonably stable.
- Avoid prolonged direct light.
- Label containers so items can be found without repeated handling.
- Inspect stored clothing periodically.
Compression has limits
Vacuum bags may save space but can flatten insulation or structured garments. Follow the maker’s storage guidance, especially for down, padded and delicate pieces.
Leather and mixed materials
Use material-specific guidance. A leather conditioner is not suitable for every coated leather, suede or mixed-material item. Check the product and item instructions before treatment.
After a dye project
Complete the prescribed afterwash, dry fully and check for transfer before storage beside other items. Store the care and process information so future laundering is consistent.Explore our textile care guides for washing and color-change planning.
