Use tools designed for the task
A rotary cutter needs an appropriate cutting mat and, for straight cuts, a suitable ruler. Check the cutter’s instructions, blade condition and locking mechanism before starting.
Prepare a stable cutting area
- Lay the mat flat on a stable surface.
- Arrange fabric without stretching it off grain.
- Keep the cutting path clear.
- Position the ruler so your fingers remain away from the blade.
- Start with a manageable number of layers.
Make controlled cuts
Hold and operate the cutter as directed by the maker. Cut away from yourself along a stable guide. Stop to reposition rather than reaching awkwardly or pivoting fabric against an exposed blade.
Close the blade between cuts
Engage the cover or lock whenever the tool is put down. Keep the blade out of reach of children and others using the workspace. Follow the model-specific procedure for blade replacement and disposal.
Curves and specialty cuts
Use a tool and guide suited to the curve and material. Pinking shears create a zigzag edge; they are not a universal substitute for accurately cutting a sharp curve.
