Modal is a manufactured cellulosic fiber
Modal is a type of regenerated cellulose in the rayon family. Cellulose is processed into a fiber, then made into yarn and fabric. A wood-based raw material does not make the resulting fiber a naturally harvested textile fiber like cotton or flax.
Check the specific source
Beech wood is associated with some modal products, including particular branded fibers. Do not assume every generic modal product has the same wood source, production location or environmental performance.
Fabric properties also depend on construction
Modal may appear in knits, wovens and blends. Yarn, weight, structure and finishing affect drape, feel, stretch and care. A fiber name alone cannot guarantee a garment’s performance.
Compare claims carefully
Read the modal percentage and other fibers.
Distinguish a generic fiber from a named branded product.
Check sourcing and processing evidence.
Look for product-specific comparisons and their boundaries.
Use the finished item’s care label.
Dyeing considerations
Select a process compatible with the actual composition. A modal blend may contain polyester or stretch components that respond differently or limit heat. Test a representative sample through preparation, dyeing and afterwashing.TENCEL’s fiber information explains its branded lyocell and modal products. Its claims should not be transferred automatically to all generic modal.
