Pressing helps construction
Pressing can set seams, manage bulk and support shaping during sewing. The technique must suit the material. Heat and moisture that help one fabric can mark, shrink or distort another.
Check the limits
- Use the fabric or garment’s care instructions.
- Follow the iron’s instructions, including water requirements.
- Test a representative sample.
- Protect prints, pile, coatings and embellishments.
Press rather than drag where needed
Lift and reposition the iron for seams or vulnerable areas to avoid stretching. Support curved sections with an appropriate pressing form. Let the area cool before moving it so the intended shape can settle.
Steam and pressing cloths
Use steam only where permitted. A pressing cloth can protect a surface but does not make an excessive temperature safe. A garment marked “do not iron” should not automatically receive the iron’s steam instead.
Avoid unsupported hygiene claims
Ordinary pressing is not a validated disinfection process for every garment. Choose the approved cleaning method for the item rather than increasing heat to pursue an unverified claim.
After dyeing
Complete the prescribed washing and drying process before judging or pressing the result. Finishes and trims can impose different limits from the main fiber.Read more sewing and textile care guides for project planning.
